Cate Blanchett in Paris for Big and Small

Image © Lisa Tomasetti 2011

Last night the hubby and I attended a performance of Cate Blanchett’s Big and Small, which is on tour through Europe and currently performing at the Théâtre de la Ville. We were blown away by Cate’s performance: so big *and* so small, in this complex and thought provoking piece about the search for human connection.

The play performs until April 8th in Paris — if you’re a Cate fan, I won’t say the name of the hotel she’s staying at, but it’s in Saint-Germain-des-Pres, so chances are you might find spot her and family walking around taking in the sights before they head to London’s Barbicon on the next leg of their European tour.

Gloria Gaynor, Grace Jones and Chaka Khan, Sister Sledge and The Pointer Sisters last night at Etam!

Etam-muse and top-model, Natalia Vodianova, sat center stage with love, Antoine Arnault. Joining the pair front row and center were Audrey Marnay, actors Mélanie Thierry, Gilles Lellouche, and Ludivine Sagnier for this rip-roaring Motown affair! The party of the night!

Carven Paris Fashion Week SS12

It’s no secret, I love Guillaume Henry for Carven. He’s the fashion industry’s current darling and definitely deserves the kudos — designing sweet, girly, gamine looks that would look perfect on the Alexa Chungs or Olivia Palermos of the world.

Sitting front row at his Paris Fashion Week presentation a few weeks ago were Inès de La Fressange and Isabelle Huppert and although the show took quite a while to start, we have to say well done Monsieur Henry for putting together your first real runway défilé! Hope to see you around our neighborhood very soon! (NB: Yes, we’re neighbors!)

Karl Lagerfeld for Hogan

Will this be one of the best parties of Paris Fashion Week again? Karl Lagerfeld presents his Spring Summer 2012 collection for Hogan at a cocktail in a hotel particulier on Friday night. Last season’s party with The Kaiser himself, Lady Amanda Harlech, Natalia Vodianova, Lou Doillon, Elisa Sednaoui, Leigh Lezark, Bruno Mars, M.I.A., Elettra Wiedemann, and Daisy Lowe, all hitting the red carpet, was quite the event! A moment with… Didier Ludot for Petit Bateau

On Monday I attended a cocktail for the launch of the Didier Ludot collection for Petit Bateau. Monsieur Ludot is most famous for his vintage boutique, located in the historic Palais Royal, which sells not just vintage but only haute couture vintage. Ludot will famously refuse to sell you a piece if he thinks you will alter a garment, this is real haute couture after all, so naturally it’s a no-no to alter anything.

His collection for Petit Bateau is a collaboration for his La Petite Robe Noire boutique, where he sells a selection of modern dresses all based on vintage inspirations. Obviously this is the place to go to in Paris if you need a black dress.

I interviewed Ludot for a story last year, so couldn’t resist getting his thoughts on this collaboration for Petit Bateau:

Tell us about this project?

It really amused me because Petit Bateau is a historic “house” after all — that’s also the image of La Petite Robe Noire, which is a traditional garment and emblematic of French chic. Petit Bateau is also emblematic of French quality and it’s something that has been around for a long time, so we really had fun with this collaboration, to create dresses that are a little bit sexy, and less sporty.

And also to create something for children for the first time as well…

It’s true, and we absolutely wanted to create dresses that could be worn by the mother as well as her daughter. So when we were designing we made sure that it was something a little girl could wear as well. I loved working on this project, we worked very hard and very quickly on it. We also got out my old fashion cuttings, because we wanted to incorporate certain clin d’oeil [winks] to different couture houses.

And what’s next for you after this?

Ah, you know there are always lots of projects but I can’t talk about anything yet. It’s a surprise!

My favorite dress, it looks so Catherine Deneuve circa Belle du Jour

Can’t resist showing one of Ludot’s own black dresses from his La Petite Robe Noire collection

The delightful packaging for this collaboration.

Pure Parisian chic, wouldn’t you say?

Luxurious morning and lunch at L’Hotel Paris

Hubby and I took advantage of one of our wedding gifts on Friday morning. A gift certificate for a morning swim and massage at L’Hotel, followed by lunch in their 1-star Michelin restaurant.

L’Hotel is famously the hotel where Oscar Wilde passed away. It was restored in the 1950’s and quickly became a haunt of the rich and famous: Grace Kelly and The Rolling Stones are just a few of the famous names that have stayed as guests. Carine Roitfeld also loves the bar and apparently Tilda Swinton always stays here whenever she has to come to Paris.

We arrived at 10:30 am to find the pool area all prepared for us. Robes and slippers were waiting — the pool gate was closed behind us and the floor-to-ceiling curtains were drawn, for the ultimate privacy. We splashed about, going from the sauna to the pool, it was divine to have the whole place for ourselves. Soon after the masseuse arrived and we took turns to get pool-side massages. Needless to say, we were in 7th heaven.

Note the lovely Green & Spring bath products.

The morning was over too soon and we took showers and walked up stairs, totally blissed out, for the second part of our treat: a lunch in their Michelin star restaurant.

An airy skylight greets guests, in this Jacques Garcia designed Empire dining room. I probably could have easily fallen asleep at the table, but luckily I had worked up an appetite in the pool and my tastebuds were calling out!

The avocado and crab starter

Foie gras starter — note the flecks of gold

Bar main course — topped with herring eggs

Rabbit with seasonal vegetables

Saint Nicolas cheese with thyme emulsion

Finished by my pear and sorbet dessert.

This package was called “L’Hotel Indulge” in case anyone else is inspired to offer a gift such as this. Let me tell you, your friends will be very, very happy to receive this! It was the perfect relaxing wedding gift! Merci M & M!!

Shoe of the Day

Dreaming of Sergio Rossi’s Black fishnet and patent leather Camouflage pump from their Fall Winter 2011/2012 collection. I think the fishnet gives a little bit of edge to what is a classically good-looking shoe. Someone like Kate Middleton (sorry: Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge) should go for a shoe like this: it’s a wardrobe staple but still allows you have to have fun and show a little personality.

What do you think? xox

Ask Dr. Brandt

I’m so excited! I just found out that Dr. Frederic Brandt has started a new radio series where he talks about his skin secrets and answers questions en direct from the public. Of course Dr. Brandt is known for his celebrity clientele and is reportedly the only person Madonna allows to touch her face. The radio series kicked off on September 10th, so we’ve only missed two episodes, and goes until October 15th.

According to his French PR, who sent a press release this morning, Dr. Brandt talks about everything in this series: effects of the sun, Botox, fillers, injections, laser treatments, home vs. office treatments, etc. He’s known for his less invasive ideas on plastic surgery so I can’t wait to hear what his preventative tips are for people in their early 30s, like moi.

Tune in every Saturday morning at 13PM EST to Sirius XM Satellite Radio (which you can listen to online here).

Downton Abbey returns!

Dan Stevens as Matthew Crawley (L), Hugh Bonneville as Lord Grantham (R)

My favorite guilty pleasure is back on Sunday night! The wonderfully addictive and ever-so-fun historic serial drama: Downton Abbey. Last season saw the introduction of the aristocratic Earl and Countess of Grantham and their three lovely and eligible daughters: Lady Mary, Lady Edith and Lady Sybil. The Earl married the Countess, an American heiress, for her money — but by chance, fell in love with her over the years. With no sons and an entailment on the estate — please don’t ask if you don’t already know ;-) (try reading some Jane Austen and you’ll get the idea!) — various members of the family, such as the Dowager Countess of Grantham, scheme to marry off Lady Mary, the eldest daughter, to a distant cousin and recent heir-apparent to the Earldom: Mr. Matthew Crawley. We also follow the trials and tribulations of the Abbey servants, a group of people who have given up almost all of their freedom, but who take enormous pleasure and pride in serving well and honestly — can you imagine!

People in the UK have gone quite Downton Abbey mad! Pick up almost any newspaper and you’ll see the characters are referred to like they actually exist!

If you missed the first season you can still get the boxset, I’m dying for mine in order to see all the behind-the-scenes extras, like the filming in the real Highclere Castle (who have actually changed their Internet header to: The film shoot location for Downton Abbey!) and interviews with writer, Julian Fellowes (also writer of Gosford Park).

Stay tuned! It’s back on ITV1 on Sunday September 18th.

Spring Summer is party perfect for fans of Jason Wu. Sitting front row at his New York Fashion Week presentation were Glee’s Lea Michele (chatting with Harper’s Bazaar editor Glenda Bailey), Top Chef”s Gail Simmons (hey, we love food!), Caroline Sieber, Harley Viera-Newton, Sara Rutson and Anna dello Russo, among others. From what we hear, the show after-party was particularly gorgeous, with guests surrounded by walls of roses and hydrangeas. We love Monsieur Wu!
